Google has added AI Skills to Chrome to help you save your favorite workflows
Google announced on Tuesday that it is expanding the AI capabilities of its Chrome web browser with a new feature dubbed “Skills.” This functionality enables users to save their most frequently used AI prompts and reuse them across different webpages, effectively eliminating the need to re-type them manually.
This feature is deeply integrated into Google’s broader deployment of Gemini AI within the Chrome browser. The update arrives amidst a wave of new competition in the browser market, characterized by AI-first alternatives such as OpenAI’s Atlas, Perplexity’s Comet, and Dia from The Browser Company.
While Gemini already empowers users to query webpages and generate summaries, the new “Skills” feature takes this functionality a step further. It introduces a streamlined approach, enabling users to create and save custom AI prompts that can be executed repeatedly on any webpage with just a single click.
Google highlights the practical utility of this feature with a culinary example: if you frequently request vegan alternatives while browsing recipe websites, you can now save that specific prompt to apply it effortlessly across various sites.
To save a prompt as a Skill, simply capture it from your chat history. Once saved, you can access it in Gemini in Chrome by typing a forward slash (/) or clicking the plus sign (+) icon. The Skill will then execute on your current webpage—including any other tabs you’ve selected. Google notes that you can edit these saved Skills whenever necessary.
During initial testing, Google observed that early adopters primarily utilized the Skills feature for health and wellness tracking—such as calculating macronutrients in recipes—as well as for conducting comparative shopping and summarizing long-form documents.
To facilitate the adoption of this new feature, Google is introducing a “Skills library” containing a collection of common workflows and tasks across categories such as productivity, shopping, recipes, and budgeting. Users can seamlessly integrate these pre-programmed Skills into their Chrome profile and retain the ability to further customize them by modifying the underlying prompts.
Consistent with other Gemini features in Chrome, Skills includes a built-in safety measure: the tool requires explicit user approval before executing sensitive operations, such as sending emails or scheduling calendar events.
Starting today, the Skills feature is being rolled out to Chrome desktop users who are signed into their Google accounts. Please note that at launch, this functionality is exclusively available for browsers configured to English (US)
