In an executive shakeup at OpenAI, COO Brad Lightcap has been appointed to a new position to manage ‘special projects’

According to a Bloomberg report, several executives at OpenAI are moving into different positions within the company. This news regarding the leadership shuffle was later confirmed by an OpenAI representative in a statement to TechCrunch.

Fidji Simo, the CEO of AGI Development, revealed in a memo that OpenAI’s COO, Brad Lightcap, is taking on a new role focused on “special projects.” This position entails managing intricate deals and company-wide investments, with Lightcap reporting straight to CEO Sam Altman.

Denise Dresser, the former CEO of Slack who recently became OpenAI’s Chief Revenue Officer, is set to assume a portion of the commercial responsibilities previously managed by Lightcap.

Simo also shared some personal updates, mentioning that she will be on medical leave for the upcoming weeks. During this time, she will be focusing on managing a neuroimmune condition.

In the memo obtained by Bloomberg, Simo noted that although she tried her best to avoid taking time off, her health has unfortunately made it necessary. She expressed that the timing is incredibly frustrating because of the exciting plans the team is currently working on, and she regrets missing out on any of it. While she is away, Greg Brockman, the president and co-founder of OpenAI, will be overseeing the product department.

According to the memo, OpenAI’s head of marketing, Kate Rouch, is also leaving her current position to focus on recovering from cancer. However, she plans to return to a more specialized and focused role once her health improves. In the meantime, the company is preparing to begin the search for a new Chief Marketing Officer (CMO).

In a statement to TechCrunch, OpenAI mentioned that their leadership remains dedicated to their core goals: pushing the boundaries of research, expanding their reach to nearly 1 billion global users, and supporting enterprise applications. The company emphasized that they are in a strong position to maintain their steady progress and momentum.
